A Cinema and Digital Images

For the second consecutive year, Imagina is organizing, in collaboration with the Centre National de la Cinéma-tographie, a full-day session entirely devoted to the cinema.

10.00 am to 6.00 pm

Although they have not yet become completely commonplace, digital techniques are nevertheless part of everyday life in the cinematographic industry. Authors, producers, film-makers and directors of photography are today confronted with these techniques and with the specialists who use them. Imagina seeks to draw these two groups of professionals together, so that they can jointly debate on the advantages (and/or drawbacks) of digital techniques within the cinematographic industry.

Four sessions, based on practical works, have been designed to open up the discussion.

The first session deals with the "image" production line:

* How are roles allocated between the director of photography, the laboratory team, and the "digital" team, from initial choice of the film support to the final copy?

* What are the constraints, and what are the procedures?

The second session will focus on "new production":

In terms of financing, organization, and methods, digital images renew production practices at various levels. Consequently, new professions are emerging as veritable strategies. The producer, the artistic director, and the special effects director must establish schedules, foresee additional expenditure, and define skills, i.e. be familiar with numerous risk factors.

The third session will be devoted to effects made possible through digital techniques. It will deal with:

* "New" images which cannot be made otherwise, but also with "old" images now being made with new methods.

Scenery, touching up, and animation, from the film-set to the computer, generate new types of complementarity.

Finally, the closing session will discuss problems of writing, and try to identify prospective proposals for reflection:

* Will today's dreams indeed be tomorrow's realities?
